Tension in Hirakud industrial town: Authority clamps prohibitory orders

Local administration Friday promulgated prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC to prevent any untoward incident following labour dispute over two groups of Hindalco Smelter Contractor Labour Union.

As part of a precautionary measures, police also detained 133 contract labourers following the dispute over the election of the president of the labour union.

As per information, dispute arose while one group nominated Sipra Mohanty, a BJD leader as their president another group nominated George Tirkey, MLA as their president.

They labour department, the local administration and the contractors of the company who have appointed these contract labourers were confused as both sides were using the same letter pad and the same registration number of the union in their correspondent to the labour department and the local administration.

Tension prevailed in the town as the group led by George Tirkey tried to hold a meetings in Hirakud to which the other group protested.

To avert any such unpleasant situation, the authority promulgated prohibitory order and the police detained more than one hundred persons as they tried to hold the meeting violating the prohibitory order.

“We are keeping close watch on the situation and in no circumstances, ”we will allow anyone to breach the peace,” Hirakud police station IIC Mihir Panda said
