Thousands protest in several US cities against election of Trump

In United States, thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of several US cities to protest against the election of Donald Trump, shouting slogans and burning effigies of the businessman.

In New York, thousands marched on Trump Tower, voicing their opposition to Mr Trump’s policies on immigration, gay rights and reproductive rights.

Police had erected concrete barriers and other security measures outside the 5th Avenue skyscraper, which is likely to be Mr Trump’s headquarters during the transition to power. The New York Times reported that fifteen people were arrested in New York.

In Los Angeles, a mass rally shut down a key freeway near the city. In Chicago, crowds blocked the entrance to Trump Tower. American flags were burned at some protests in Portland and in Oregon.

California police said the demonstrators blocked traffic in Oakland. Demonstrations also took place in Philadelphia, Boston, Seattle and San Francisco, among other cities.

Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump makes his first appearance at the White House today, after his stunning upset over Hillary Clinton in presidential election. He will meet with President Barack Obama for talks aimed at ensuring a smooth transition of power.

Trump said, his immediate priorities are restoring the country’s infrastructure and doubling its economic growth.
