Assamese Film On Witch Hunting To Hit Screens Next Year

A full-length feature film on witch hunting, a burning issue in Assam, will be released in the state soon with shooting for the film already completed.

Being made by Angeekar Films as its maiden venture, the film Aei Maatite has been directed by independent filmmaker and eminent theatre personality Dr Sitanath Lahkar.

The film is an adaptation of his stage play, Tamasaa, on the burning issue of witch hunting affecting Assam and many other states, an official statement said here today.

The story, screenplay, dialogues, lyrics and direction of the film are by Dr Lahkar, retired Principal of Cotton College. This will be his first feature film.

The shooting of Aei Maatite was done in four locations Jaipur village in Rani, Guwahati, Dimoria and Panikhaiti. The shooting progressed as per plans and ended within the schedule with the help of a very hard working unit. We received enormous help from the villagers of Jaipur during our shooting work there.

Our morale was also boosted by constant support from the Kamrup District Administration, Assam Police, Fire Services Department and Dimoria College during the 25 days of shooting at various locations, Dr Lahkar said.

The film will cinematically showcase some of the inhuman killings in the name of witch hunting. The post-production work has immediately started and the first-cut of the film is being made at the moment, the press statement added. The film is expected to be released during middle of next year.
