Bangladesh Ferry Tragedy : Death toll goes up to 38

The death toll in the ferry tragedy has risen to 38 in Bangladesh . The ferry, carrying over 150 passengers capsized today in river Padma in central Bangladesh. The ferry was hit from behind by a fertilizer-laden cargo vessel.

Local people rushed to the rescue of the passengers with boats and trawlers. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and the naval police have launched a salvage operation. At least 60 people have been rescued, but many are still missing.

The victims include children and women. Manikganj Deputy Commissioner of Police has said that the resue operation is still going on, with Fire Service divers joining the efforts of Naval police and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation. The capsized ferry has been located and a rescue tugboat is trying to pull it up.
