BJP MP Shyam Charan Gupta’s Controversial Statement : Smoking Beedi Does Not Lead To Cancer

A controversy has erupted following Parliamentary committee member and BJP MP Shyam Charan Gupta’s statement that smoking Beedi does not lead to cancer.

Gupta Thursday said that he knows chain smokers who do not have cancer.

Opposition parties including Congress, SP and CPI-M has criticised him. Thsese parties alleged that there is a conflict of interest as Gupta was in tobacco trade and they also sought his removal from the Parliamentary committee panel.

Terming Gupta’s inclusion as a member in the committee as grossly unethical, Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha said if he is running crores worth of beedi business the conflict of interest is culpable.
