Center Seeks Report On Nadia Nun Gang Rape case From West Bengal Govt.

The Centre has asked the West Bengal government to send a report on the incident of gang rape of an elderly nun at a convent in Nadia district and action taken so far.

The Union Home Ministry Monday told the state government to give a detailed report about the incident, whether there was enough security at the convent and the steps taken to prevent such incidents in future.

It also asked the West Bengal government to inform the Centre about the action taken to punish those involved in the incident.

The 72-year-old nun was allegedly gangraped by dacoits at Gangnapur in Nadia district on Saturday morning after which a CID probe was ordered into the incident.

A study of the CCTV footage at the convent in Ranaghat subdivision had shown visuals of four persons, who were allegedly involved in the crime. Police has so far detained 10 people in this connection. Police
had announced a reward of one lakh rupees to any individual providing credible information leading to the arrest of the accused.

Though, police have detained 10 persons in connection with the recent alleged gangrape of a nun inside a convent school at Ranaghat in Nadia district but none has so far been arrested for the crime. The failure of the police has created major public outrage in the area.

The convoy of the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while she was returning from Ranaghat last night was also gheraoed by the agitated local people demanding immediate arrest of culprits and CBI probe over the incident. The Chief Minister assured that a CID probe is on and guilty will be nabbed soon.

Meanwhile, the nun who was admitted into a local hospital after the incident is stated to be stable. People from all walks of life including Catholic gathered at Allen park in Kolkata yesterday to show
solidarity with the sisters of the convent of Jesus and Mary of Ranaghat.
