CWG : Indian athletes Avinash Sable and Priyanka Goswami win silver medals in their respective events

In Commonwealth Games today, India added three silver medals to its kitty today. Indian athletes won two silvers with Avinash Sable winning 3000 meter Steeplechase run, clocking new National Record of 8 min 11 points two seconds. While Priyanka Goswami won another silver in Women’s 10,000 meter Race Walk. Indian men won silver medal in Lawn Bowls fours event.
The country was assured of three more medals in Wrestling and Boxing each. In Wrestling, Ravi Dahiya defeated Pakistan’s Ali Asad in men’s 57 kg semi-final and assured at least a silver for the country. In men’s 74 kg category, Naveen defeated England’s Charlie Bowling in the semi-final and in women’s 53 kg freestyle Vinesh Phogat entered the final. She defeated Mercy Bolafunaoluwa of Nigeria. However, Pooja Gehlot lost to Canada’s Madison Parks in women’s 50 kg semi-final.
In Boxing, India’s Amit Panghal entered the final of men’s flyweight and Nitu Ghanghas progressed into the final in women’s minimum weight category. Nikhat Zareen () became the third Indian boxer to qualify for the final of women’s light flyweight category. She defeated England’s Stubley Alfia Savannah.
In Table Tennis, in Men’s Singles Quarter-Final, India’s Achanta Sharath Kamal defeated Singapore Yong Izaac Quek 4-0 to enter the semi-final. In men’s doubles, Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran entered the final and assured of at least silver after defeating Australia’s Nicholas Lum and Luu Finn. In mixed doubles also India’s Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula reached the final. They beat Australia’s Nicholas Lum and Jee Minhyung in five games in the semi-final. However, Sreeja Akula lost in women’s singles semi-final to Singapore’s Tianwei Feng. She goes down 6-11, 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 10-12 and will now fight for the bronze medal.
In Badminton, P V Sindhu defeated Malaysia’s Jin Wei Goh by 19-21, 21-14, 21-18 and progressed to Semi-final.
In Cricket, India defeated England by Four runs in the Semi-Final of women’s T-20I cricket at Edgbaston and entered in final. With the help of Smriti Mandhana’s fastest fifty, India scored 164 runs, England could manage only 160 runs.
The Indian pair of Abhay Singh and Velavan Senthilkumar lost in the men’s double squash quarterfinal against Malaysia’s Yow NG Eain and Wern Chee Yuen. They lost the contest 0-2. Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal also lost to New Zealand’s Paul Coll and Coelle King in squash mixed doubles semis.
The Men’s hockey team will battle it out against South Africa in the semi-finals. Para table tennis player Bhavina Patel will square off in the gold medal match.
President Droupadi Murmu has congratulated Priyanka Goswami for winning silver in race walking at Commonwealth Games. In a tweet, Ms. Murmu said, becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walking Priyanka Goswami has opened a new chapter of achievements. She said, her feat will inspire millions, especially the girls.
President Droupadi Murmu has also congratulated Avinash Sable for winning silver in Steeplechase at Commonwealth Games. In a tweet, Ms. Murmu said, Avinash Sable has been consistently raising his level of performance which is an inspiring aspect of his success. She conveyed best wishes to him for his future endeavours.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated national race walking champion Priyanka Goswami for winning the coveted Silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. In a tweet, Mr. Modi said, with this medal, she has inspired many youngsters in India to take up this sport. He hoped that Priyanka Goswami will keep scaling new heights of success in the times to come.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also congratulated Avinash Sable on winning Silver Medal. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, Avinash Sable is a remarkable youngster and he is delighted he has won the Silver Medal in the men’s 3000 metres Steeplechase event. The Prime Minister also shared his recent interaction with Avinash Sable where he spoke about his association with the Army and how he overcame many obstacles. Mr Modi said, his life journey is very motivating.
