Deficit Rainfall Results In Net Fall In Average Ground Water Level At 2.66 Metres Across AP

Andhra Pradesh which received 36 per cent deficit rainfall this year recorded a net fall in the average groundwater level at 2.66 metres across the State.

In the rain shadowed and drought prone Rayalaseema region it has been 5.10 metres as compared to the levels of last year according to a release from the Groundwater Department.

In North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, during 2014-15 up to 15 March, the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam received normal rainfall with the remaining 10 districts recording deficit rainfall.

Coastal Andhra region received 34 per cent deficit, while it was four per cent excess during the same period last year. As a result, there was a net fall of 1.57 metres in ground water levels in the region.

Whereas Rayalaseema region, as against seven per cent deficit the previous year recorded 43 per cent deficit this year, resulting in a net fall of 5.10 metres.

The deficit rainfall in the State has resulted in drying up of seasonal wells and decrease in well yields in the four districts of Rayalaseema region, Prakasam and upland areas of other districts.
