Govt To Conduct Research On Medicinal Quality Of Ganga

A comprehensive research for establishing the medicinal benefits of Ganga would be conducted as a joint effort of the ministries of Water Resources, Environment, Health Ministries and the Indian Council of Medical Research .
“There are three aspects of the Ganga river: religious, economic and medical benefits. While much has been known about the religious and economic aspects of the river, the health impact of its water has never been researched upon. It is very important as it will give a direction to the National Mission for Clean Ganga,” said Minister of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharti at a workshop on ‘Non putrefying properties of Ganga water’.
Ms Bharti added that maintaining clean Ganga was a much bigger challenge than cleaning it because there are several of people taking dip in the holy water
The National Mission for Clean Ganga project, aimed at gaining in depth study into the special properties of Ganga and its preservation has been conferred to CSIR NEERI by Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has been conferred
Emphasising on the self putrefying properties of Ganga , Minister of Health and Family Welfare ,J P Nadda extended full support and cooperation by his Ministry to the project in any all ways possible. “The river Ganga, a lifeline for millions has a unique ability of self putrefying which leads to retaining 25 time more oxygen levels than any other river in the world .Despite widespread abuse of Ganga by people and factories it has been able to preserve itself and its properties, said Director,CSIR NEERI, Nagpur , Dr Satish Wate .
The workshop was also attended by academicians, scientist , enviornmentalist from various top medical and engineering institutes.
