IMSSH Conducts Rare Open Heart Surgery With Nephritic Syndrome

The Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital (IMSSH) under SOA University, Bhubaneswar , the only teaching hospital in Odisha with NABH accreditation, has successfully conducted a unique and rare adult open heart surgery with nephrotic syndrome recently.
Reports of adult open heart surgery could not be traced in internationally-circulated literature on patients with nephrotic syndrome, Dr Jitendranath Patnaik, who conducted the surgery told newspersons here.
“ Patients with nephritic syndrome always face the risk of heart failure during this kind of surgery”, he said adding ,” we have conducted the critical surgery successfully at highly competitive price’.
Dr Patnaik, who underwent super speciality training at the premier institute of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research at Chandigarh, said the patient with nephrotic syndrome, on whom he had conducted surgery on April 21 last, had visited several prominent hospitals in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, where the doctors had not taken the risk of conducting surgery.
He said one Ram Chandra Panda (25 ), a resident of Dhenkanal, had been facing difficulty in breathing for over eight years
He was suffering from breathlessness, even if he undertook light walking or tried to climb stairs, when he was only five-years-old.At the age of 17, Chandra had problem in breathing and was treated in the cardiology department when it was found that he was suffering from mitral valve stenosis. This apart, he was also suffering from nephritic syndrome, which caused protein loss from the body.
Patnaik, the Head of the CTV Departmnent, said ,the patient was advised to undergo mirtal valve replacement, but it could be done due to financial constraints causing the disease to get aggravated . Prominent hospitals in Hyderabad and Bengaluru , which the patient visited subsequently , refused to conducdt the operation.
Ram Chandra , he said , however brought to the IMS and Sum Hospital. After undergoing the tests , the CTVS Department decided to conduct the Surgery under the supervision of the Nephrology department on April 21 last .
Special attention was given to the maintenance of the protein level in the body of Ramachandra as he was leaking protein through the urine, This reduced the possibility of heart failure, Dr.Patnaik said .
After the surgery, the patient was put in chrge of group of experts in the ICU who toiled to maintain the function of the kidneys and level of protein, Dr.Patnaik said
