Indian women’s archery team crashes out of Rio Olympics

The Indian women’s recurve team, comprising of Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi, Monday crashed out of the team archery event of Rio Olympics after suffering a narrow defeat against Russia here.

The trio, which earlier in the day defeated Colombia in the pre-quarters, failed to continue the performance and lost in the shootout 4-5.While Russia started out the first set on a brilliant note after firing 55, India could only manage to attain 48 points. However, India made a strong comeback in the second set and settled things after firing 53 points, while Russia could only manage to get 52.

India again fired a brilliant 53 in the third set whereas Russia lagged behind by three points as they could only manage 50. The Russian team however equalised the matter in the final set by firing 55.

On the other hand, even a draw in the fourth set could have lifted India to the semis however, after firing a total of 54, the match went on to a shootout. The higher-ranked Russian team then dominated the shootout and eventually entered the semis.
