Mamata Announces Bifurcation Of New Districts In West Bengal

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday announced bifurcation of new districts in the state.

Addressing media persons after a Cabinet meeting, Ms Banerjee said the state will carve out new districts from existing one and six months to one year will be required to complete the process.

The Chief Minister announced the state government has decided to bifurcate Darjeeling district form Kalimpong and Mirik will become a new sub-division.
Jhargram will become a new district carving out from West Medinipore and Bardhaman will be bifurcated into Bardhaman Rural and Bardhaman Urban districts, she said.

Ms Banerjee said the state government will also make Sunderbans district from North 24 Parganas and Basirhat will be a new district.

Two new sub-divisions will come up at Purulia district, the Chief Minister said.

Ms Banerjee also announced rehabilitation package for tea gardens and Jangalmahal.

In recent time, states tea gardens have been hit by consecutive shut downs, less wages, starvation and deaths of workers.

The Chief Minister announced rice at low price will be given to the tea garden workers.

Ms Banerjee also declared from January 27, the state government will start a new scheme for food security. Around 3 crore additional people will be included in this system and will get food grains at Rs 3 a kg, she said.

The state government has planned to include seven crore out of nine crore people in the food security, Ms Banerjee added.
