Margao Hospital Introduces Uni-compartmental Knee Replacement Surgery

The Orthopaedic Hospital for Surgery, Margao, Monday announced introduction of uni-compartmental knee replacement surgery at the hospital.
Addressing a news conference here Monday , Dr Shreeram Kamat Dhakankar, chief joint replacement surgeon at Orthopaedic Hospital for Surgery, said an Oxford partial knee replacement procedure was performed on 62-year-old male patient Dessai as the patient had been suffering from severe pain in the knee joints for the last many years.
Listing out the advantages, Dr Kamat-Dhakankar said that partial knee replacement, as against total knee replacement, was now available to patients in Goa.
Dr Dhakankar said, “The partial knee implant procedure can preserve the healthy bone, cartilage and ligaments, preventing or delaying the need for total knee replacement. The incision is very small for a partial knee replacement and the surgery is minimally invasive. The folding of the leg is 30 per cent more in partialreplacement. Sitting down cross-legged as is in Hindu tradition especially for religious functions is very possible with this surgery.”
Professor Hemant Pandit, University of Oxford, United Kingdom, who is part of the designer group of surgeons of the Oxford Partial Knee Replacement System, said, “Another key advantage with this
procedure is revision surgery is much easier to perform on patients, who undergo partial replacement in comparison to those who undergo total replacement, thus saving bone for this surgery as well if needed.”
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) of the US has made it mandatory for all orthopaedic surgeons in the US to attend an Oxford Training course before performing an oxford surgery, he said.
This training is required because the implantation technique for this procedure is very precise and the operation must be done correctly, he added.
