Odd-Even Scheme Rolls Out In Delhi To Curb Vehicular Pollution

The odd-even scheme for cars to curb vehicular pollution in Delhi came into effect this morning. Initially, the scheme will be on trial basis for 15 days.

Schools will remain closed during the period. Under the scheme, odd number registration cars will ply on odd dates and even number on even dates. The Scheme will be in operation from 8 in the morning to 8 in the evening. However, the scheme will not apply on Sundays.

The VIPs, women drivers, CNG-certified vehicles, two-wheelers and those carrying the differently-abled are among the 25 categories which are exempted from the scheme. However, the exemption will not apply to Delhi Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues as the have decided to abide by the rule. Those found violating the scheme will be penalised with a fine of 2,000 rupees. AIR correspondent reports that helpline numbers 011-42400400 and 011-41400400 will be available for the public for their guidance about the scheme.

Reacting on the odd-even scheme, BJP has termed the Odd-even scheme for cars in the national capital as faulty exercise saying it is bound to fail.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi, party spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi alleged that Delhi government is looking for escape route. She said the AAP government is following the strategy of blaming the centre without putting proper efforts for rolling out the scheme.

Ms. Lekhi said it would put only six per cent of vehicles off roads and claimed that the AAP government had chosen a convenient time frame to roll it out as during Jan 1-15 schools are closed.
