PM announces 20 pc increase in freedom fighters’ pension

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday announced an increase of 20 per cent in the pension of freedom fighters.

Modi made this announcement from ramparts of Red Fort while addressing the nation on the occasion of 70th Independence Day. “Pension for our freedom fighters will be increased by 20 per cent. So those receiving monthly pension of Rs 25,000, will now get Rs 30, 000,” Mr Modi said.

The Prime Minister also announced that the government will build museums, where contribution of tribal communities in the freedom struggle will be highlighted in order to give them their long due credit and recognition. “It is our intention to record the history of Adivasi freedom fighters in the areas of their origin in a museum,” Modi said.

He also announced a major relief for BPL (below poverty lines) families, committing that the government will bear cost of their medical expenses up to Rs 1 Lakh. “Entire economy of a poor household gets hit when somebody falls ill and this scheme will ensure that such families are not deprived of healthcare benefits,” the Prime Minister said.
