President Prorogues Rajya Sabha

President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday prorogued the 234th session of the Rajya Sabha.

”The Rajya Sabha, which commenced its 234th session on February 23, has been prorogued by the President on March 28, 2015,”the Rajya sabha Secretariat said.

The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs yesterday decided to prorogue the Rajya Sabha, which is an indication given by the government to re-promulgate the Land Ordinance.

The Upper House had failed to pass the Land Ordinance bill in the just concluded first phase of the Budget session.

The Land Bill has already been passed by the Lok Sabha, but the government could not table it in the Rajya Sabha following the Oppositions stiff resistance.

The Ordinance would lapse on April 5 if not re-promulgated, and promulgation could not be resorted to if the House is in session. Both the Houses of Parliament had been adjourned on March 20 for the month-long recess.
