Protect Right Of Women To Enter Places Of worship, Bombay HC To Mha Govt

The Bombay High Court has directed Maharashtra government to take pro-active steps for protecting the fundamental right of women to enter the places of worship.

The court Friday disposed of a PIL challenging the bar on entry of women in the main part of the Shani Shingnapur temple in Ahmednagar district.

The Court said, it can only pass a general direction to the government and cannot go into the individual cases. It said, if any person has any grievance that the Maharashtra Hindu Place of Worship (Entry Authorisation) Act is not being implemented, then he or she can approach local authority with their complaint.

Earlier today, Maharashtra Government told the high Court that it is against gender discrimination and that all have the right to visit place of worship. The Government also informed the court that it will direct all district collectors and police in the state to implement the Act.
