Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day on Uttarakhand issue

Rajya Sabha failed to transact any legislative business on the opening day Monday of the new Session as the House faced repeated adjournments on the issue of promulgation of President’s Rule in Uttarakhand.

The House witnessed four adjournments before adjourning finally for the day. Congress members continued to stall proceedings accusing the Centre of murdering democracy in non-BJP ruled states.

When the House re-assembled at 3 PM, the issue was again raised with the agitating Congress members trooping into the well shouting slogans against the Centre. Deputy Chairman Prof. P J Kurien tried to take up the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2016 amid sloganeering by Congress members. Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said Congress is not against the Constitution Amendment Bill.

But, it should not be passed when there is disorder in the House. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi took serious objection to Prime Minister’s name in slogans.

Meanwhile, several BJP members raised counter-slogans against Congress. Taking note of the situation, Prof Kurien adjourned the House for the day as noisy scenes continued.
