Angul,November 06.

The elusive tigress Sundari, who created havoc in Satkosia villages since her release in wild on August 17 last, was tranquilized today at the end of 16 days’ vigorous efforts. Sundari was tranquilised by Satkosia doctor Kishore Chandra Sahu, near the Shiv temple of Majhipara-Behera Sahi jungle at about 10.45 hours Tuesday.

The tigress was immediately shifted to a special enclosure at Raigoda, 40 km away from the Majhipara. She regained consciousness and her health is stable, forest department officials said.

The tigress, brought from Madhya Pradesh to increase the tiger population in Satkoshia Tiger Reserve, was staying at Majhipara-Behera Sahi for last two days after coming from Kadalikhole jungle near Purunakote.

The tranquilisation team and forest officials were monitoring her movements all through with the help of Jasodha elephant brought from Chandaka Elephant sanctuary.

Elephant Jasoda had almost travelled 100kms since she arrived here on Saturday last for the mission to capture Tigress Sundari.

This morning, according to a source, the tigress was spotted at a plain area near Majhipara. The elephant was reluctant to go to the spot through bushes.

Finally, the team went to the plain area on a vehicle where the tiger was roaming and Dr.Sahu fired the shot which hit the backside of the tigress .

She was immediately medically examined by the doctors and put in a cage .The cage was loaded in a carrier and taken to special enclosure at Raigoda where she was kept for observation .

Additional Chief Conservator of Forest of Angul circle Sudarshan panda said the tigress has revived and is in good health at the enclosure.

He said the authorities of NTCA and the wild life institute would take a decision on the steps to be taken about Tigress Sundari .

“At present she will be housed in the enclosure,”Panda said.

The tigress Sundari was translocated to Sakosia from Bandhabgarh of Madhyapradesh on June 28 and stayed in the enclosure till August 17 when she was released in to wild.

Male tiger kanha, which was also brought from Madhya Pradesh and released into the wild of satkoshia forest, moved deep into the forest and almost settled .

But the Tigress Sundari preferred to stay near the villages and did not move deep into the tiger reserve.

The tigress started attacking human beings, triggering wide spread violence in Satkosia villages. She had killed a woman Kailashi Sai from village Hatibari on September 12, and again on October 21 killed one Trinath Sahu in village Tainsi .

Sensing the anger and outrage of the villagers after the killing of two persons by the tigress, the forest department decided to tranquilize her .

Efforts were made with requisition of three teams from the state and another two teams from outside the state to capture the tigress and when such efforts failed, the help of elephant Jasodha was sought.
