Uddhav Thackeray all set to be elected unopposed to Maharashtra Legislative Council

Mumbai, May 12:
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is all set to be elected unopposed to the State Legislative Council after the scrutiny of nominations was completed today. While four candidates, two each from BJP and NCP withdrew from the race, nomination of the independent candidate was held invalid.

With nine nominations for nine vacant seats, all candidates are set to be elected unopposed. Besides Thackeray, the other official nominees of the Maha Vikas Aghadi are Neelam Gorhe of the Shiv Sena, Shashikant Shinde and Amol Mitkari of the NCP and Rajesh Rathod of Congress.

The BJP’s nominees are Ramesh Karad, who had filed his nomination yesterday, Gopichand Padalkar, Pravin Datke and Ranjitsinh Mohite-Patil.

The election was crucial for Mr. Uddhav Thackeray who had to get elected before 28th May, or risk losing his post as Chief Minister. Mr. Thackeray had taken the oath as chief minister on November 28 last year and per the constitution, he had to become a member of the legislature within six months to continue in the post.
