Union Govt, Dimisses Reports Of Scrapping UGC

Union Government Wednesday dismissed media reports that it is going to scrap the University Grant Commission based on the reports of a committee which was constituted to recommend restructuring and strengthening the UGC.

In a statement, Human Resource Development Ministry said the media reports in this regard is incorrect and uncalled for as the recommendations of the committee are yet to be understood and analyzed.

The Ministry said, the Commission has been created by an Act of Parliament and it cannot be unilaterally scrapped.

It also said, the mandate given to the Committee was to analyze, review and recommend an appropriate architecture to meet the desired objective and the Ministry will have to take a view after going through it threadbare.
