Union Govt. To Re-promulgate Land Acquistion Ordinance Succumbing To Opposition Campaign

The Union Cabinet has decided to recommend re-promulgation of the land acquisition ordinance.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Tuesday presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sources said, the new ordinance, include nine amendments, that were part of the bill which was passed by the Lok Sabha last month. The bill is pending before the Rajya Sabha, where government is in minority.

The Opposition parties, which have mounted a strong campaign against it, are demanding the passage of the original land bill that was passed during the UPA regime.

The ordinance will lapse on the 5th of this month if not re-promulgated. Now, the recommendation will go to President Pranab Mukherjee for promulgation.

The President had prorogued the Rajya Sabha last week on the recommendation of Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs to pave the way for re-issuing of the ordinance.

Under the Constitution, at least one of the Houses has to be prorogued for Government to issue an ordinance.

Parliament is currently on a month-long recess after the Budget session started on 23rd of February.
