Uproar in Odisha Assembly over farmers issue, House adjourned

An uproar in the odisha Assembly by Opposition Congress and BJP members over the farmers issue forced Speaker P K Amat Friday  to adjourn the house for the day without any debate.

The Assembly could not transact any business except passing the obituary reference on the inaugural day of the winter session today .

Soon after the house passed the obituary reference the opposition Congress and BJP members trooped into the well and shouted slogans against the government for its anti-farmer policy.

The house soon plunged into a chaotic situation forcing the speaker to adjourn the house twice.The Speaker first adjourned the house at 1114hrs till 1214hrs and again at 1218hrs for the day till tomorrow in the wake of the noisy protest by the opposition members.

The opposition members trooped into the well after the Speaker rejected the demand of the leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra to discuss the adjournment motion on the farmers moved by them suspending the question hour.

The Opposition members raised the issue of price, prestige and pension for the farmers as demanded by a Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan, an organization fighting for the interest of the farmers.

Unable to conduct the business of the house the Speaker adjourned it at 1114 till 1214 hours.

When the house reassembled after the adjournment, the Congress members again rushed to the well, shouted slogans and disrupted the proceedings of the house.

Amidst the slogan shouting by Congress members, the Speaker announced about the resignation of Koraput Congress MLA Krushna Chandra Sagaria from the house and joining of Mr George Tirkey in the Congress party.

Realising that the business of the house could not be conducted smoothly anymore, the Speaker then adjourned the house at 1218 for the day till tomorrow.

Earlier in the day the entire opposition joined the Leader of the House Naveen Patnaik to condole the sad demise of former government Deputy Chief Whip Prasanna Kumar Pal, former member Banshidhar Sahoo who died during the intervening period of the last monsoon session and the current winter session.

The house also condoled the deaths of former Rifleman of 29 Assam Rifles Champeswar Mahakud, former CRPF driver Braja Mohan Behera and former Doordarshan cameraman Achyutananda Sahu who have laid down their lives for the country.

The Chief Minister expressed his profound grief over the death and requested the Speaker to convey the condolence of the house to the bereaved family members.

Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra, BJP Legislature party Leader K V Singh Deo and Speaker P K Amat also condoled the deaths.

The house also observed one minute silence as a mar of tribute to the departed souls.BM
