08 January ,Kolkata
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in Kolkata Friday that the value of the Rupee has withstood the volatility of international markets reasonably well.
The Indian currency in the recent past has also withstood the market pressure when currencies of the major countries including Brazil and China have been twice devalued or adjusted to the respective economy’s demand, he added.
Jaitley, attending an event at St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, was replying to a question from the audience on what is being done to mitigate the value gap between Rupee and the US Dollar.
Earlier, delivering the School Alumni Association’s 2nd Distinguished Lecture on Future of Parliamentary Democracy in India, the Finance Minister said the formulators of our constitution selected the best option to run the nation post the Independence.
Pointing out that our system of governance has worked very effectively compared to the neighbourhood where military coups dislodged democratic regime at least four times, he added.
Jaitley said, that there is no external danger to our Parliamentary democracy; the challenges lie within and need to be introspected. He expressed regret that only 4-5 legislations were cleared during the last session of Parliament.
