Women’s World Boxing C’ship: Sonia, Pinki enter quarters, Boora crashes out

New Delhi,November 19:

India’s Sonia Chahal and Pinki Rani entered the quarter-finals in the international boxing body (AIBA) Women’s World Boxing championships in Feather Weight 57kg and Fly Weight 51kg categories here respectively on Monday. However, Saweety Boora lost to Elzbieta Wojcik (Poland) in unanimous (5-0) decision in Preliminaries rounds.

In a tough match, Sonia defeated Bulgaria’s Stanimira Petrova by split decision 3-2, while Pinki thrashed Ebonie Jones of England with an unanimous (5-0) decision. The Bulgarian boxer and her team coach expressed their stringent objections during the match that led to the cancellation of the coach’s accreditation by AIBA.

With these two wins, a total of five Indian boxers have secured their place in quarter-finals of the prestigious tournament.

Earlier, Five-time world champion M C Marry Kom and Manisha Mone stormed into the quarter-finals in their respective categories. Whereas, Seema Poonia (81plus) got direct entry in the quarter-finals.
