World Bank Provides Rs.100 Cr. For Development Of Sagar Island In West Bengal

The World Bank has sanctioned 100 crore rupees for all round development of Sagar Island in South 24 Parganas District of West Bengal.

The State Sundarbans Development Minister Manturam Pakhira said that the scheme includes electrification of villages, training to local women for their self reliance and improvement of the area centering Kapilmuni Temple.

Lakhs of pilgrims from country and abroad offered puja to Kapilmuni at Gangasagar on Sagar Island on the occasion of Makar Sankranti each year. But lack of proper infrastructure people faced tremendous problems during the period and other time also. To redress these problems the World Bank has come forward with a financial assistance of 36 crore rupees for the development of Kapilmuni Temple area.

Under the project Kapil Complex the Nat mandir will be beautified besides setting up a Bus Stand, mobile stalls, toilets, cottage for tourists and improvement of drainage system in the area.

The Chairman of the Sundarban Development Corporation Bankim Hazra told that the World Bank has also sanctioned 34 crore rupees for electrification in 9 Gram Panchayats in Sagar Island besides allotting 30 crore rupees for livelihood mission which includes training of local people in different segments to make them economically self sufficient. The work for the scheme has already been taken up for implementation.
