Xiaomi CEO calls on Modi

Xiaomi founder-chairman and CEO Lei Jun Tuesday discussed the smartphone manufacturer’s growth plans and showed support for Modi’s “Make in India” initiative.

Sharing the mobile manufacturer’s journey so far in India, and how smartphones were changing the lives of Indian consumers with Mr Modi expressing support for Xiaomi’s approach.

The Chinese manufacturer has been an early supporter of Mr Modi’s “Make in India” initiative, and this month reaffirmed its commitment to India with the opening of a second manufacturing plant in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh and plans to create more than 20,000 jobs in the country in the next three years.

The meeting ended with Mr Lei presenting Modi a Made-In-India Redmi 4A and the two taking a selfie together.

He also met Minister of Finance, Defence and Corporate Affairs Arun Jaitley and Minister of Law & Justice and Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Lei is here in connection with the Economic Times Global Business Summit, where he explained how Xiaomi has used the Internet+ model to become a disruptor in India.

His trip is an acknowledgement of the importance of global expansion to Xiaomi, which officially entered the Indian market over two years ago and has already invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the country.

India is now the most important market outside of China for the Chinese manufacturer and Xiaomi India achieved annual revenue of over 1 billion dollars for the calendar year of 2016, a statement here said.
