BJP, Cong Term Kejriwal’s Move For Referendum On Statehood To Delhi As Un-constitutional

BJP and Congress have criticized Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over reports that he has written to city’s Urban Development Department to explore the possibility of a referendum on the issue of full statehood for Delhi.

Talking to media,, Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay said that the proposal of going for a referendum on the issue is yet another evidence of Mr Kejriwal’s anti constitutional nature. He alleged that the political vision of Mr Kejriwal is inspired by what he called naxalism or terrorism.

Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken has accused Kejriwal of fooling people and said, for statehood, the Constitution would have to be amended and that power rested with the Parliament alone.

Maken said, the idea of referendum as proposed by the Chief Minister is a dangerous one and this is not only unconstitutional but it is anti-national as well.

Reports say last month in a note to Urban Development Department, Kejriwal sought a feasibility report on how the national capital’s people can be asked to vote on whether Delhi should be accorded full statehood.

AAP leader Ashish Khaitan Monday said the referendum for statehood is necessary.
