Center Orders Inquiry Into Attempt To Suicide Of 4 Young Female Athletes In Kerala

Four young female athletes attempted suicide at the Sports Authority of India centre in Kerala. One of the athletes, a 15-year-old, died early today and three others, all undergoing training at Water Sports Centre of SAI in Alapuzha, were hospitalised after they ate a poisonous substance in an apparent suicide pact following alleged harassment by seniors.

The Sports Ministry has swung into action by ordering an inquiry and directing SAI Director General to rush to Kerala for an on the spot assessment. Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal has said that strictest possible action will be taken against anyone found guilty pushing the four athletes to commit suicide.

In a statement, Sonowal said that he is deeply aggrieved by the incident. He said the young girl who died was a promising sportsperson.

The Minister said, it is a big loss to the country in general and Sports Authority of India and sports fraternity in particular. He said, government will give all possible help to the bereaved family.
