Delhi Court summons Kejriwal, 5 others in Jaitley’s defamation case

A Delhi Court Wednesday gave orders to summon against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and five others Aam Aadmi Party leaders, in a criminal defamation complaint filed against them by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
Jaitley has alleged that Kejriwal and others had made defamatory statements that Mr Jaitley and his family had made pecuniary gains by associating with M/s 21st Century Media Pvt Ltd, a sports management firm.
Jaitley had filed a criminal defamation complaint against Mr Kejriwal and others AAP leaders for allegedly defaming him in the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) controversy.The court had recorded the statements of complainant and other witnesses.
Jaitley, the complainant had submitted before the court that Kejriwal and five AAP leaders had made “false and defamatory” statements. Jaitley had denied the false allegation levelled by Kejriwal that he received money when the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium was constructed during his tenure as the DDCA Chief, was false as Board of Directors had constituted a committee to supervise the work and he was not a member of this supervisory committee.
Jaitley had said their statements against him and his family members lowered his dignity in the eyes of the public at large. The complained case has filed against the Kejriwal and others under sections 500 (criminal defamation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sumit Dass after hearing the arguments said, “I am summoning Arvind Kejriwal, Kumar Vishwas, Ashutosh, Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha and Deepak Bajpai for April 7 to appear before the court”.

BJP, RSS want to snatch right to contest from exploited & suppressed: Rahul

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday charged the BJP with trying to take away right to contest from all those who have ‘been denied access and are exploited and suppressed’.
The party vice-president’s reaction followed the passage of the amendment to the Motion of Thanks on President’s Address in the Rajya Sabha regretting a mention of the government’s commitment to fundamental rights of all citizens to contest elections at all levels.
In a major embarrassment to the government, it was passed with an amendment moved by Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad.
The amendment was moved against the backdrop of laws passed by Haryana and Rajasthan state Assembly to make educational qualification a condition for fighting elections to Panchayats and Nagarpalikas.
Gandhi said, ”The right to contest elections is a basic right of every citizen of India. Our founding fathers fought against the British for this right. By making educational qualifications mandatory for contesting Panchayat polls, the BJP and RSS want to take this right away from the poor, Dalits and the adivasis.”
Earlier, the Congress described the amendment passage as a ‘symbolic victory’ for the Opposition.”

The fact that the amendments were passed with 94 votes in its favour and 61 against is an indication that the government was able to garner support of all the Opposition parties,” AICC spokesperson Jairam Ramesh told a news conference.Azad and AICC spokesperson R P N Singh also addressed the press meet.
