DU Students Protest Against Seminar On Ram Janmabhoomi

Hundreds of students associated with National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the youth wing of the Congress, and Left wing unions today staged a protest outside the Delhi University Arts Faculty against a seminar on the Ram Janmabhoomi.

The protesters objected to the holding of the seminar, addressed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.

Raising slogans and flashing placards, the protesters said, Such type of seminars should not be allowed on the university campus and it was an attempt to polarise the communities.

The university is a place where programmes pertaining to providing jobs should be initiated. Such seminars should not be encouraged as it raises mixed feelings among students. It is a ploy to incite the youth for political gains.”

Several protesting students have been detained by the police.

Slamming the protesters, Dr Swamy, who addressed the inaugural session, described the agitating students as intolerant.

India decided after partition to have people from all faiths. Parsis were offered reservation but they refused saying they have been taking care of them very well. India was not a new country after partition, it accepted everyone, Dr Swamy said in his inaugural address.

People should be made aware about the issue of Ram Janmabhoomi. We need to tell people that it is not a disputed issue. If government brings a Bill then it is good, and if not, we will wait for the Supreme Court judgement,” the BJP leader said.

Historians, archaeologists and law experts will participate in the two-day seminar titled Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple: Emerging Scenario being organised by Arundhati Vashishth Anusanthan Peeth (AVAP), a research organisation founded by late VHP leader Ashok Singhal.
