16 September, New Delhi

In a major step towards implementation of restructuring of the Income Tax Department, the Government has approved the promotion of 153 officers to the rank of Commissioners. The officers making to the Commissioners ranks belong to 1992, 1993 and 1994 batches.

”With these promotions, the Department will be able to address the shortage of officers at various stations to a significant extent. These officers will be deployed in posts primarily dealing with matters of dispute resolution, ” the Finance Ministry said in a statement.

It is expected that with these postings, the Department will be able to address the backlog of taxpayers appeals, it said.

A cadre restructuring of the Income Tax Department was approved by the Government in May, 2013.

The restructuring exercise has gathered momentum this year with the Department moving towards filling-up posts at various levels, the statement added.
