India celebrated their first ever win over New Zealand in a T20 match when Virat Kohli and co defeated Kane Williamson’s side by 53 runs in the first T20 here on Wednesday.
India was put to bat by Kane Williamson, but that did not stop the hosts from scoring as they posted a mammoth total of 202-3 from 20 overs, thanks to knocks by Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. In reply, New Zealand never found their way, as the Indian bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals.
In the first over, it was Yuzvendra Chahal who picked up the wicket of opener Martin Guptill. Soon after, they lost captain Kane Williamson, who departed for 28. Axar Patel’s spin magic did the trick for India, as he removed Tom Bruce and Colin de Grandhomme in the 13th over.
Later on, Chahal also removed Tom Latham, as India closed in on victory. In the end, the hosts were a better side than Kane Williamson’s men.
Earlier half of the damage was done by Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan when they struck 80 runs apiece in their 158 run stand at the top of the order. It helped further that both got a reprieve with two catches getting dropped.
Later Virat Kohli added a rapidfire 26 from 11 balls to take India over the 200 run mark. Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first in Delhi.
Shreyas Iyer played his debut game while Ashish Nehra bid farewell. India are also now 1-0 up in the three-match series. With this match, Ashish Nehra’s career came to an end. His final figures were 4-0-29-0.
