India Targets 500 Million Internet Connections In Two Years

Having crossed one billion mark telephone connectivity,India has set a target of 500 million internet connections in the next two years,IT and Communication Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Monday.

India has crossed telephone connectivity of 1 billion, adding five- seven million new connections every month .

“In a population of 1.25 billion, we have got 980 million mobile connections, around 978 to be precise. Our phone connectivity has crossed one billion,” Mr Prasad said at a C-DOT function here.

While the present penetration of internet is around 300 million connections, the government aims to take the number to half a billion by end of 2017.

He said for the Digital India initiative to succeed,the other programme Make In India aimed at giving push to the local manufacturing should be successful.

Government owned C-DOT has launched a range of products which include long distance Wi-Fi , solar-powered Wi-Fi , 100 Gbps OFC (optical fibre cable) link and Next Generation Network for MTNL.
