Karnataka Moves SC Against Jaya’s Acquittal In DA Case

The Karnataka government Tuesday moved to the Supreme Court against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s acquittal in the disproportionate assets case. In its appeal, the state government has sought setting aside of the Karnataka High Court order and also pleaded that the disqualification of the AIADMK chief be restored. The state government also alleged that he did not get ample opportunity to put forth its case before the High Court.

The Karnataka High Court acquitted Jayalalithaa and three others in the case on the 11th of last month, setting aside a special court order of September 2014 sentencing them to four years in prison. The acquittal cleared the way for her comeback as Chief Minister.

Reacting to the Karnataka government decision, BJP today said the decision is political witch hunting. Talking to AIR in New Delhi, party spokesperson G V L Narasimha said, it a clear case of political vendetta against the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister by the Karnataka government.

However, leader of the Opposition in Karnataka Assembly and BJP leader Jagadish Shetter told AIR that he has no reservations about the decision of state Government. He said, it has been his stand as Opposition leader that the case should be filed in such issues of corruption.

On the other hand, Congress said there is no politics by the party or the Karnataka government in the case. Party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala told AIR that Karnataka government’s decision to move the Apex Court is purely based on the advise of legal counsel.

The opposition parties in Tamil Nadu including DMK, Congress, PMK, and CPI have welcomed Karnataka government’s move to challenge Jayalalithaa’s acquittal. This has came barely a day after she started her campaign for the upcoming by-election at the RK Nagar Assembly constituency Monday.
