Kerala Assembly Speaker G.Karthikeyan Passes Away

Kerala Legislative Assembly Speaker G Karthikeyan passed away in Bangalore Saturday.. He was 66.

Karthikeyan was undergoing treatment for liver cancer at a private hospital in Bangalore. Karthikeyan, who is widely respected for his affable approach, had served as Electricity Minister in the A K Antony Cabinet.

He also held portfolios of Food and Civil Supplies and Cultural Affairs. He was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly five times from Aryanad constituency on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram.

The funeral of G Karthikeyan, will be held at Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow – Sunday evening with full State honours. His body is being flown to Thiruvananthapuram from Bangalore by special aircraft.

His body will be kept at Assembly Hall, KPCC headquarters Indira Bhavan and his native village Aryanad for people to pay tributes to the departed leader. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Leader of Opposition V S Achuthanandan, CPIM State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan and KPCC President V M Sudheeran have condoled the demise of Speaker G Karthikeyan.

Kerala Government has declared a seven-day mourning as a mark of respect to Karthikeyan. Holiday has been declared for government offices, public sector undertakings and educational institutions today afternoon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the death of Karthikeyan.
