Lalit ModiRow, Vyapam Scam Rock Parliament On Day 1 Of Monsoon Session
21 July, New Delhi
Parliament Tuesday could not transact any significant business on the opening day of the Monsoon Session with opposition pressing for the resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Chief Ministers of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh over Lalit Modi episode and Vyapam scam.
The Lok Sabha was adjourned after paying tributes to its sitting member Dileep Singh Bhuria and 13 former members.
The opposition demand for resignation of Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje and Shivraj Singh Chouhan rocked the proceedings in the Rajya Sabha, which witnessed five adjournments.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Muktar Abbas Naqvi ruled out resignations of ministers on the issue of Lalit Modi.
He said in the Rajya Sabha, no body will resign and the government wants discussion on the issue even as Congress members continued to press for their demand.
The agitating Congress members, who trooped into the well of the Rajya Sabha , wanted resignations first and thereafter discussion.
Earlier in the day, leaders belonging to Congress, Samajwadi Party and CPIM moved motions seeking discussion on the issue.
However, when the government came out on its own to end the deadlock by offering a discussion,, the opposition backtracked saying that discussion will follow only after resignations by ministers.
