NDRF Develops Device To Keep Flood Affected People Afloat

In a bid to keep flood affected people afloat, National Disaster Response Force, NDRF has developed a device by using coconuts and jute ropes in Assam.

As the monsoon is set to hit the region, the device has been tested to keep citizen afloat in emergencies.

Official sources asserted that the method is simple; two ropes are put in at the top and bottom of the coconuts, leaving an equal gap between them. The device is to be tied above the waist to keep a person afloat in water for several hours. This device may help people in flood prone areas in case of non-access to life jackets and boats.

Flood and land erosion caused wide spread damages in Assam almost every year. The Indian Space Research Organization has also developed a Flood Hazard Atlas by mapping flood prone and vulnerable areas. Based on it, district administrations can prepare action plan on relief and evacuation in advance.
