Over 38 Lakh Accounts Opened In Post Offices Under Sukanya Samridhi Scheme

Over 38 lakh accounts have been opened in different post offices so far under small girl child savings scheme Sukanya Samriddhi.

The scheme was launched in January this year in Panipat in Haryana for the welfare of girl child by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The account can be opened in post offices as well as banks.

The department of Post has set a target of one crore Sukanya Samriddhi accounts in the country to spread awareness and provide benefit of the scheme to more and more numbers of girl child. This information was given in a written reply by Minister of Communication and Information and Technology in the Rajya Sabha Friday.

The account can be opened up to the age of 10 with a minimum deposit of one thousand rupees in a financial year.

The total deposit in a year cannot exceed Rs 1.50 lakh. The deposit will attract 9.2 per cent interest. Fifty per cent of the deposit can be withdrawn for higher education and marriage purposes after she attains the age of 18.
