Sidhu, his family violate Election Commission’s norms
04 February, Amritsar
Congress star campaigner and party candidate from Amritsar East Navjot Singh Sidhu today reportedly violated norms laid down by the Election Commission as he entered the polling booth premises along with his vehicles.
The cricketer-turned-politician, his wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu and their son Karan Sidhu entered the Mata Saroop Rani College premises along with their cavalcade of three private SUVs cars by throwing all the norms to wind. As per Election Commission guidelines nobody would move in the building of polling booth along with their vehicles except handicapped or differently-abled.
Sidhu and his family who were moving in the three different SUVs cars were stopped at the main entrance gate of the polling booth by the paramilitary forces but gained entry by saying that he was carrying special permission to go inside along with vehicles. On being contacted, Deputy Commissioner Basant Garag said a complaint has been received in this regard through portal.
“We are verifying the facts by checking the CCTV footage. If legitimate proof proved that his vehicles were found inside the premises, action to be initiated as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India. Sidhu was not permitted to go there along with his vehicles,” Garg quipped.
It is worth mentioning here that Sidhu’s residence falls in the Amritsar North Constituency and as a reason he along with his family went to poll vote at Mata Saroop Rani College falling in the North Constituency.
Sidhu has recently joined Congress after saying goodbye to BJP. After joining Congress he opted to contest election from Amritsar East assembly constituency where his wife Navjot Kaur had won the elections during the previous Assembly polls on the ticket of BJP.
Earlier today in the afternoon in Majitha constituency, heated arguments took place between Revenue Minister and SAD candidate Bikram Majithia and his Congress rival Sukhjinder Raj Singh Majithia. As Majithia strongly objected the presence of vehicles belonging to Congress candidate inside the polling booth. On the objection of SAD candidate vehicles were removed from polling booth.
