Theatre personality Kanhailal passes away

Heisnam Kanhailal, 65, a world renowned theatre personality breathed his last here today at his Imphal residence.
Born on January 17, 1941 he was awarded Padma Bhushan this year.

Kanhailal, who established Kalakshetra Manipur in 1969, has produced large number of plays which have been acclaimed at the international levels. Large number of people visited his Keisamthong Thangjam Leirak residence to pay tribute to the departed soul.

He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Direction in 1985. In December, 2011, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Ratna Award (the Highest ranked and most valued akademi award). He was also honoured with Padmashri in 2004.
