WB Transport Minister Madan Mitra’s Bail Plea Turned Down Again

17 July, Kolkata

A division bench of Calcutta High Court Friday further recused itself from hearing the bail plea of jailed state transport minister Madan Mitra, the second time since his arrest in December last year for his alleged link to multi-crore Saradha chit-fund scam.

The bench, headed by Justice Girish Chandra Gupta, sent back the plea before the Chief Justice Manjula Chellur for assigning it to another bench.

A division bench, comprising Justices Asim Kumar Roy and I C Das in March this year declined to hear Mitras bail plea citing personal grounds.

Though in judicial custody, Mitra has been at SSKM Hospital for the better part of his custodial tenure for a wide range of ailments including anxiety.

Recently he was shifted to a VVIP suite of the hospital.

Since arrest in December last year, his bail pleas have been rejected at least 12 times at the lower and higher courts.
