Constitutional Values Under Attack In Country: Sonia

26 November, New Delhi

Terming the recent incidents involving religion totally against the values of Constitution, Congress Member Sonia Gandhi today said ”principles of Constitution are under attack”.

Launching a frontal attack on ruling NDA government on the issue of ‘growing intolerance’ in the country, Ms Gandhi said, “What we have been witnessing for past few months is completely against the values that have been ensured by our Constitution”.

Taking part in the discussion on ‘Commitment to India’s Constitution’ as part of 125th birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar, she said Constitution Committee was guided by four eminent personalities at all levels – Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad and Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad and the Constitution was framed during Congress’ rule and the party deserves credit for it.

“Jin logon ki samvidhaan ke nirmaan mein koi bhumika nahi hai vo aaj samvidhaan ki baat kar rahe hain (People who have no role in building of the Constitution are today talking about it)”, she said taking potshots at the BJP.

Ms Gandhi said the Constitution has upheld secular values for nearly five decades but expressed sadness at the present scenario in the country.

“Today is a day of happiness but at the same time, sadness too, because values of the Constitution are being attacked, Ms Gandhi said.

Sharply attacking the Narendra Modi Government, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said there could be no bigger joke than ”the fact” that those who don’t have faith in the Constitution or played no role in drafting it were Thursday swearing by it.

she said the incidents in the past few months clearly showed that these were totally against the principles enshrined in the Constitution.
