RS Member Khekiho Zhimomi Passes Away,House Adjourned For The Day After Obituary Reference

The Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland Khekiho Zhimomi passed away following a cardiac arrest at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here this morning. He was 69 years old.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday after an obituary reference to sitting member Khekiho Zhimomi.

In the obituary reference, Chairman M. Hamid Ansari described Zhimomi as an “active social worker who strived for the upliftment of weaker and downtrodden sections of society”.

Zhimomi was member of the Rajya Sabha twice, from July 2008 to April 2010, and from April 2010 till his demise. Zhimomi belonged to the Nagaland People’s Front and was the lone Rajya Sabha member from Nagaland.

He served as the member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly for three times.

He also served as the Cabinet Minister of Industry, Commerce, Mining and Border Affairs in the Government of Nagaland.

Zhimomi started his political career as a student leader and was the founding member of Nagaland Students’ Federation.

He was also a successful industrialist in the state.

He had recently visited Myanmar with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval for the signing of peace agreement between several insurgent groups and the Myanmar Government.
