JNU row escalates: Lawyers beat up students, BJP prez slams Rahul
15 February, New Delhi
As lawyers manhandled and pushed JNU teachers and students supporting varsity students union president Kanhaiya Kumar when he was about to be produced in a Patiala House court, the BJP launched a blistering offensive against Congress scion Rahul Gandhi for backing anti-nationals and terrorists in the name of the freedom of expression.
The BJP said Gandhi seldom cared for those who were guarding the borders and the victims of terror attacks.
Teachers and students of JNU, who were reportedly present in the court to support Kanhaiya Kumar, were manhandled, pushed and forced to move out of court by lawyers by shouting slogans of Long Live India, Down with JNU.
According to police sources, there was a fight inside a Delhi court just before the hearing on Kanhaiya Kumar, who was held last week by the police over an event organised in support of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on February 9, in which anti-India slogans were allegedly raised.
Journalists were also attacked and beaten at the spot.
BJP president Amit Shah charged Mr Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi with backing anti-nationals and terrorists in the name of the freedom of expression, seldom caring for those who were guarding the borders and the victims of terror.
Mr Shah said it was matter of concern that Gandhi had visited JNU and supported the students who had raised highly provocative anti-India slogans and eulogised terrorists. “Do you care for soldiers who are guarding the borders in Siachen, losing their lives after being buried in snow. Do you care for the victims of the Parliament terror attack, who lost their near and dear ones in it,” he asked Gandhi.
The BJP leadership is understood to have decided to take the issue head on espousing the zero tolerance towards the alleged ”anti-national activities”.
”Demoralised by Modis successes, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders in their desperation were not able to differentiate between those for and against the country.” he wrote in his blog.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi alleged that the BJP government was trying to divide the people along religious lines and warned the people against falling victim to such divisive politics.
He also alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed to keep his pre-poll promises and was trying to woo people only with words but no welfare action on ground.
